You Can Understand A Door Chime Wiring Diagram

Many people panic when given a set of instructions, especially for any do it yourself project.  But with the cost of everything spiraling out of control these days, do you really need to call a handyman for every single home repair or home improvement job?  If you can get a driver’s license, you can install a door chime.  You just need to deal with test anxiety – or, do-it-yourself anxiety, in this case.  Just take a deep breath and look calmly at the door chime wiring diagram.

Baby Steps

Door chimes are a little less irritating than door bells, which is why many people prefer them and need to get them installed in the first place.  They can be from one to eight notes per chime.  They work on the same principal as your doorbell.  You press the doorbell button and that makes a “Chimey-chime” noise or whatever noise you decided on.

First, get the door chime, some electrical tape, a drill, a low-voltage tester (cheap and easy to find) and any pliers or wire strippers, a screwdriver, a first aid kit and the door chime wiring diagram.  Read the instructions.  You may need more tools than what is listed previously.  Read them again.  Take your time.  The world will not end if you cannot figure out the door chime wiring diagram.  Just like with everything else, just take it one small step at a time.

If your door chime does not come with a door chime wiring diagram, do not despair yet.  There are many basic door chime wiring diagrams in home repair books and on line.

You Can Do It

I obviously cannot reproduce a visual diagram with words.  You need to see it in order to figure out what wire goes where.  Door chime wiring diagrams differ from make to make and from whatever wiring are already in your home.  You can put your new door chime on your already existing doorbell (be sure to check that the doorbell spring hasn’t broken) or you can mount a completely new door chime.  You’ll need to drill holes in your walls to hang up the chime maker box (the mounting base) and maybe even a transformer.  You may need to add wiring.  Luckily, low-voltage wiring is cheap, so feel free to make mistakes.  You’ll learn better that way.

So, you’ll need a wire from the doorbell button to your mounting base and another wire from your mounting base to a power source (a transformer, battery or outlet).  Some models will be battery operated, so you only have to worry about wiring to the button.

By the way, getting first aid kit was just a joke, but the sight of it nearby can often calm shaky nerves.
