  • Instructions
  • ‘Calcheck’ tool
  • Flat moisture probe and lead
  • Wood calibration chart for over 150 wood species
  • Carrying pouch

Deluxe Kit Upgrade Includes:

  • 5″ deep wall probes

This compact instrument has eight calibration scales, enabling the user to take accurate moisture measurements in 150 wood species. When necessary, it can be used with a temperature probe that automatically corrects the measured moisture level with respect to the temperature of the wood being tested.

The Protimeter TimberMaster is a new simple to use moisture meter designed for nearly any building materials with no calibration changes required.

It is ideal for a range of inspection and quality control applications, and features the same electronics and sensitivity of the PR2000 and SurveyMaster instruments.

These compact, general purpose moisture meters are used by building professionals and trades across the globe to check the moisture level of wood and masonry products for a vast range of quality control and dampness diagnosis applications.

The TimberMaster incorporates a range of design refinements and features that make it much simpler to use than the instrument it supersedes. The stylish instrument case fits snugly in the hand, so it can be used effortlessly for long periods and the new display is large for visual clarity.

Also if the instrument is inadvertently left on, it switches off automatically after five minutes to conserve the battery life. Protimeter have used their knowledge and expertise to produce an instrument that combines sympathetic design with optimized functionality.

All readings are displayed on a large, easy to read LCD display. May be used with optional heavey duty hammer electrode (PR5055) for sub-surface measurements.

Protimeter moisture meters are calibrated for wood but are also suitable for measuring moisture levels in other materials. They are highly versatile tools for assessing the moisture condition of a wide range of non-conductive materials. In wood, the instruments measure the material’s actual percent moisture content (%H2O). When testing material other than wood, the meters measure the wood moisture equivalent (WME) value of the material. WME is the moisture level that would be attained by a piece of wood in equilibrium with the material being tested. As the critical moisture levels for wood are known, WME measurements enable the moisture meter user to establish if materials are in a safe air dry, borderline or damp condition.
Relative humidity (%rh) is the degree of saturation – or the amount of water vapor that air contains – relative to the amount it would contain if saturated. This is often expressed as a percentage, so saturated air at a given temperature has 100%rh.If air is warmed, the amount of water vapor it could hold at saturation is increased. Consequently, the %rh value falls, even though the actual amount of water remains constant. Similarly, if the air is cooled, the amount of water vapor it can hold is reduced. Consequently, the %rh value rises.

Condensate forms when there is an excess of water in saturated air.

If a dry and absorbent material, such as wood or brick, is placed in a very damp environment (high %rh) it will absorb water and its moisture content will increase. Conversely, absorbent materials with high moisture content will lose moisture to a dry environment (low %rh). The movement of moisture from material to environment and vice versa continues until the vapor pressures (within the material and the environment) have equalized. When this condition is reached, the moisture level of a material can be expressed in terms of equilibrium relative humidity (ERH).

ERH techniques are very useful for assessing if structures are in a dry, borderline or damp condition. For example, when the ERH of a concrete floor falls to 75%, a flooring contractor knows that it has dried sufficiently for a decorative floor covering to be laid.

Dewpoint is the temperature at which a sample of air becomes saturated. Condensation forms on surfaces whose temperature is equal to or lower than the prevailing dewpoint temperature.
    • <18% (Green Zone) – The material is in a Safe Dry condition, moisture related problems of decay/deterioration will not occur.
    • 18% – 20% (Yellow Zone) – The material is in a Borderline condition, decay/deterioration may occur under certain conditions.
    • > 20% (Red Zone) – The material is in a Wet condition, decay/deterioration is inevitable in time unless the moisture level of the material is reduced.

      • has been heavily contaminated by hygroscopic salts, or
      • in materials that are conductive by their own nature.
    • Artificially high moisture meter readings may be obtained in material that

In the case of hygroscopic salts, the presence (or otherwise) of nitrates and chlorides should be established when investigating suspected rising dampness situations in particular. This can be achieved with the Protimeter Salts Analysis Kit (PR4900).

If the material being tested is conductive an alternative moisture measurement technique should be used. A hygrometer could be used to measure the material’s ERH, or its actual moisture content could be determined with an Ashworth Instrumentation Speedy™ tester (see product information).

  • What is the Wood Moisture Equivalent (WME) scale as used on Protimeter moisture meters?
    What is Relative Humidity (%rh)?
What is Equilibrium Relative Humidity (ERH)?
    What is Dewpoint?

At what level of WME is a material in a wet or dry condition?

I suspect my %WME readings in a wall are too high, what should I check?

I use this instrument sometimes daily, and it always works flawlessly. I
have used other moisture meters, but none have the features or ease of
use as this unit. I highly recommend this product.

I, also, use this instrument regularly, and it has been a convenient asset to
our equipment stock; however, I do have one problem with the
    thermohygrometer’s range of performance (Range 30 – 100 %rh
Range 32 – 122 deg F) when working in freezing climates, measuring
dehumidifier output, etc. My suggestion is to keep these limitations in mind
if you are working in a field that may require you to record psychrometrics
outside of this unit’s performance. I believe there is an additional
attachement you can buy from GE that will allow you to record rh below
30% and temperatures below 32 deg F. One further note I can make on
this product is that GE stands behind it. They have been great to us in the
    past.

  3. Eddie says:

I kind of miss this unit. If I could do the same “trigger” style counts that I can with my delmhorst, I would switch back to it in a moment.

The non-invasive is more useful than the delmhorst moisturecheck’s but far less useful than a tramex.

The hammer probe is extremely large and poorly designed. Dri-Eaz did recently launch a large box for this unit, however it is a little un ergonomic.

    Batteries last literally forever.
