Visitor Chime: A High-Tech Doorbell

Doorbells have been used for donkey’s years to let you know someone wants to see you.  They are great time savers (every day except Mischief Night) and also good security features.  They are great not only for private homes but for businesses, especially small businesses short on staff.  A visitor chime can act as another pair of eyes looking out for your security.

“Now, Pay Attention, 007…”

Visitor chimes come in many different sizes, weights and prices.  Some are thin as a cell phone; some are as blocky as a fire alarm.  They are usually battery operated, but some can plug into electrical outlets or need extra wiring.  The average price is about twenty dollars (batteries not included).  By just deterring one shoplifter or getting you faster to a paying customer’s side, it can pay for itself.  At least once a week, check to see that the batteries are still working.

A visitor chime sweeps the room or a certain area before it with an infra red beam, which is next to impossible to see with the naked eye, especially in a brightly lit room.  When anything moving breaks the beam, it triggers the chime to sound.

One option for a visitor chime is that it comes with a keypad, making it at first look like a phone.  The keypad is to enter security codes to turn the visitor chime off and on.

Uses In The Private Sector

Visitor chimes aren’t just for work.  They are also great security devices for homes.  Most visitor chimes are portable and battery-operated, so you might want to put one in your garage or screen door if you have to keep going back and forth to your garden or tool shed.  You might want to put a visitor chime in any room where babies or pets aren’t allowed in, say if the living room is being painted and you don’t want the baby or pet to drink the paint.  When the chime goes off in the entranceway or the hallway, you know the baby or pet is on the loose and needs to be grabbed.

A visitor chime can’t stun any intruder or call 911 for you, but they can give you a warning that the intruder wasn’t expecting.  Some intruders will beat a hasty retreat just knowing that they have been detected.  Most intruders need the power of surprise in order to scare you into either freezing or doing something stupid.  If you hear a visitor chime go off in one room when you are alone at home, you can lock the door of your room and call 911.

The Different Types Of Telephone Ringer Chime

Every telephone has a slightly different telephone ringer chime.  From home phones to cell phones, it seems everyone has a different sound to listen for when someone calls them.

If you want to change your telephone ringer chime, it isn’t always necessary to buy a new telephone.  There are units available that will change the ring tone of your existing phone without the need for any complicated rewiring.

Some of these units are pre-programmed to play a selection of classic songs.  Definitely an interesting alternative to the standard telephone ringer chime!

A Telephone Ringer Chime To Aid The Disabled

People who are hard of hearing can buy an additional unit to plug into their phone socket.  When the telephone ringer chime sounds, the unit will flash to indicate there is an incoming call.

Similar units are designed to ring louder than a standard telephone ringer chime, making it easy to hear the phone wherever you are in the house.  Some of these are designed to be used in business areas such as factories, where an extremely loud ring tone is needed to be heard above the machinery.

Alternatively if you work from home a constantly ringing phone can be much too loud to tolerate.  Most phones have a switch that lets you select a quieter tone.  It is also a good idea to put a rubber mat underneath your phone as this will absorb some of the sound.  You can also buy a unit which changes the tone of your phone to a much quieter and very realistic wind chime sound.

The main disadvantage of these units is that they are not portable, so they cannot be taken into the garden with you.

The Multitude Of Cell Phone Ringers

The telephone ringer chime really comes into its own where cell phones are concerned.  Modern technology has enabled us to use a multitude of sound files, songs and noises to create our own personal ringer chime.

We can connect to the internet and download any number of songs to use, and there are plenty of subscription services available that provide a set number of new tones every week for a small fee.

Will the same system eventually be extended to our home phones?  Compared to cell phones our home phones are relatively ancient in their technology, but it’s hard to believe that a much wider range of telephone ringers will not eventually become available to use at home.

Why You Want To Have The Sounds Of A Wind Chime In Your Garden

Some people find the sounds of a wind chime to be distracting and annoying.  To them they are not a natural sound to have in the garden.  But they have been around since prehistoric times and many people recognise the sounds of a wind chime to be good for encouraging relaxation.

And what better place to relax than in your garden, where you are in the middle of nature?

Popular In The East

Wind chimes have been a part of life in China and Japan for many years and they are now a common sight in the west, often thanks to the role they play in Feng Shui.  They help to create the peaceful and ordered surroundings that are an essential part of what Feng Shui stands for.

We all need a peaceful place to relax and even if we do not have a garden, the sounds of a wind chime can still be heard if we hang a set of wind chimes up at any window in our home.  When the window is open, the sounds of a wind chime will add to the sense of peace and calm which are vital for bringing about a sense of balance in our lives.

Finding The Perfect Set Of Wind Chimes

Wind chimes are available to buy in many different shapes and sizes.  They are also made from different materials, so you need to decide which material will fit in best with your garden or location.

Bear in mind also that the sounds of a wind chime will vary depending on which material they are made from.  An aluminum wind chime will sound much louder than one made from bamboo, which has a more hollow flat sound.

For this reason it is best to visit a shop and try them out when they are hanging up on display.  You need to find a sound that appeals to you and gives you a feeling of peace.  If you buy a set which gives off a sound that irritates you, it won’t stay hanging up for very long!

This is why it’s best to buy your wind chimes from a reputable shop.  Buying them online may lead to a cheaper set of wind chimes, but you can’t hear them before you buy them.

When you create your own peaceful place at home – whether it is in the garden or indoors – make sure you include at least one set of wind chimes to complete the atmosphere.

The Ultimate Lawn Ornament: Solar Lighted Ball Wind Chime

Okay, okay, take a deep breath and wipe the tears from your eyes.  A solar lighted ball wind chime is not as goofy as it first sounds.  In fact, a solar lighted ball wind chime can be one of the most elegant pieces of affordable art you can buy.  You just might want to tell your friends it has a different name than “solar lighted ball wind chime”.

What Is It?

As implied in the name, this is a wind chime (which works with wind power) topped by a glass or pseudo-glass ball that lights up (THAT’S run by solar power).  The light isn’t garish or blinding like a neon sign or a hyperactive Christmas tree.  The light is usually soft, discrete and just way cool.  If you like lava lamps or wave machines, you will most likely love a solar lighted ball wind chime.

Now, the wind chime part can come in a variety of materials, but usually it’s a kind of metal, so it makes the soothing “ding-a-ling” noise that sounds very much like a fairy’s wings passing by.  (Don’t ask me how I know that).  Wind chimes are not only beautiful and please the draconic forces that harmonize your lives (according to Feng Shui), but they are also way cool.

And, incase you are wondering, there ARE such things as solar powered wind chimes (that don’t run on wind).  They spend all day charging up in sunlight (or some sort of light) and then the light vibrates the chimes.  No wind power required.  They are usually very small.  They’re a bit different from solar lighted ball wind chimes.  In fact, often they are very accurately labeled “sun chimes”.

Affordable Art

Wind chimes are an art form that has a surprising amount of variety, elegance and humor.  Wind chimes don’t have to just look like the traditional long tubes.  They can look like animals, solar systems, flowers, waterfalls, or the ball and long metal tube combination.  Some are combined with mobiles in order to enhance their beauty.  As most wind chimes, even solar lighted ball wind chimes, are under $150, they are an affordable alternative for those wanting a useful and beautiful piece of art that can be seen by you and the admiring neighbors.  Wind chimes are also portable, so you can take them inside when the weather gets nasty or if the chimes are driving anyone nuts.  Always try to hear a wind chime before you buy it, to be sure the chimes soothe and not grate on your nerves.

There may be something peaceful about an oak chime wall clock and they can be configured to sounds a variety of sounds at varying intervals. They can also be set to provide one sound on the hour and a different chime sound on the half hour. While some are operated by electric, there are many running off battery power or with an internal spring that must be kept wound.

These clocks are available in a variety of sizes, with different oak stains made to match many environments, and are widely used in offices and dens with the chime serving as a reminder of the passing of time. They are also equipped with different size bars making an oak chime wall clock sound different from many others. Some are equipped with the metal bars with a sounding blocked activated at set time intervals while others use an electronically produced chime sound and can be adjusted for different sounds.

Many of the clock will offer different sounds at different times of the day and can be programmed to not sound the chimes at certain times, eliminating the possibility of being awakened by chimes in the middles of the night. While and oak chime wall clock is typically designed to hang on the wall, they are also available to sit on a table or mantle as well as being built into old style standing clocks, often referred to as grandfather clocks.

Clock Chime Volume Should Be Audible Not Overbearing

Many clocks also have the ability to adjust the volume of the chimes and they should be loud enough to be heard as a background sound. If the oak chime wall clock is too loud many may find them to be annoying and disconnect them, eliminating the purpose of the chimes.

Several versions of the oak chime wall clock have been developed in part to replace the standing grandfather clocks as their use as a decorative piece of furniture has waned in recent years. Available floor space in many homes has diminished removing them and having the sound of an oak chime wall clock relegated to hanging on the wall or standing on a countertop.

Faces and hands of many of the clocks can be designed to match the décor of the room in which they will be located. There are some companies that can provide a oak chime wall clock with a family picture on the face, making it a really unique piece of furniture for any room of the house.

Choosing The Right Lighthouse Wind Chime

The lighthouse is one of the most collected symbols in the United States.  Everyone loves lighthouses, so it would stand to reason that many companies would create a lighthouse wind chime for these collectors.  A lighthouse wind chime can be big or small, metal or glass, and comes in as many colors as an individual can think of.  They can be brought from online retailers, home décor stores, or you can make your own from supplies from a craft store.

Finding the right lighthouse wind chime for you is not difficult.  A wooden or metal lighthouse could be used as the clapper for the wind chime or lighthouses could be etched on the metal chimes themselves.  They can be created by a master craftsman with hundred of works to their credit or they could be the first attempt of someone who would like to create things with their hands.  The right lighthouse wind chime for you will depend on your personality and what you consider attractive.

Feature One: Size

Size is important when choosing a lighthouse wind chime.  You do not want it to be so big that it seems like a monstrosity, nor do you want it to be so small that it goes unnoticed.  The best course of action is to measure the area you would like to place the lighthouse wind chime in and take those measurements with you while shopping.  Something that looks small in a store may seem a lot bigger once it is in an enclosed area.

Feature Two: Color

Another thing to take into account is the color of the lighthouse wind chime.  You do not want a copper wind chime if everything surrounding it is steel.  Nor would you like an orange lighthouse nestled against a blue house.  Carefully consider what the lighthouse wind chime would look like in the area you would like to place it in.  If you have trouble imagining it in your head, try taking a picture of the area with you while you shop.

Feature Three: Price

The last thing to consider when choosing a lighthouse wind chime is price.  The prices for wind chimes can range anywhere from $10 to $500 dollars.  You do not want the expensive work of a master craftsman hanging unprotected from the side of the house, and you may not want something that looks like a kindergartner created it hanging over expensive patio furniture.  The lighthouse wind chime should reflect your personal style.  That is the only way that it will bring you enjoyment.
