cable television provider Bresnan Communications, a move that will help the New York cable company expand into western states.

Bresnan has cable systems in Colorado, Montana, Wyoming and Utah with more than 300,000 basic subscribers. It’s owned by Providence Equity Partners. Founder and cable pioneer Bill Bresnan died last year.

The deal follows an auction that involved bids from some of the nation’s largest cable companies. Other bidders reportedly included Charter Communications Inc.; Ascent Media Corp., a media services holding company in which media mogul John Malone has 30 percent voting control; cable company Suddenlink Communications and private investment firm TPG Capital. Time Warner Cable Inc. also reportedly put in a bid, but its offer did not survive the first round.

Cable systems operated by

Time Warner Cable and Comcast Corp., which owns 30 percent of Bresnan, are adjacent to the areas served by Bresnan.

The deal is expected to be completed later this year or early 2011.

Cablevision, the nation’s fifth-largest

cable TV operator, said it will also buy back up to $500 million worth of shares to reward shareholders.

Last month, Cablevision reported that its first-quarter net income more than tripled as it added more customers, and it boosted its

dividend by 25 percent. The Bethpage, N.Y., company, which also owns the newspaper Newsday, spun off its Madison Square Garden operations in February.

In premarket trading, Cablevision shares rose 10 cents to $23.50.

Taking the Time to Research a Program is a MUST!

Providers with “new” programs for shoplifting offenders are popping up all over the place, likely in response to the current economic climate and the increase in shoplifting being reported by retailers. Unfortunately, too many of these providers fall short in terms of client and offender support services, compliance rates and effectiveness claims – leaving the courts underserved, the offenders open to repeat offenses and the community at risk.

A major contributor to these “pop-up” programs is the internet which makes it easy for companies, with little or no experience and few if any qualifications, to create websites where information has simply been “lifted” from a variety of other sources – with or without the consent or permission of those sources. In fact, several of these new programs have simply “copied and pasted” information from others to create their “new” programs.  More often than not, the information is “lifted” from the non-profit National Association for Shoplifting Prevention (NASP) – either from the NASP website, one of the NASP programs or a NASP research report – in clear violation of U.S. Copyright Laws.  Such was the case with one long time, seemingly reputable, drug and alcohol program provider.

Another program, while we did not find that its content was plagiarized, uses discriminatory language and inappropriate – if not offensive – scenarios to make its point. One program boasts “endorsements” and “accreditation” from seemingly separate and objective websites yet the sites are not accreditation authorities at all. In fact, they are simply the same company using these other websites – which they themselves created – to endorse and accredit their own programs!

The irony of this is that these program providers are stealing the material they need to create a program to teach shoplifters not to steal!

But the most important take-away here is the need for the court system to ensure that any alternative sentencing program they utilize – whether for shoplifting or any other offense – successfully accomplishes the long-standing goals of the court system; to reduce recidivism, reduce court appearances and effectively serve the best interests of the community. Low-cost, stripped down programs are unlikely to meet these goals. Yes, corporate America is always seeking the next thing that is “faster, cheaper, better.”  However, the fact is that when it comes to truly effective crime prevention, faster and cheaper is rarely better.

To protect the court, the offenders and the community, the court officers making these program decisions must make it a priority to thoroughly research providers, to carefully evaluate the programs they offer and to verify the claims they make.

When Evaluating A Program Make Sure The Provider…  …Is Not Violating any U.S. Copyright Laws Subjecting your Court to Potential Litigation

ASK: Is the program original material? If not, what knowledge base and
sources of information were used to develop it?   …Offers a Program that is Research-based to Ensure Effectiveness.

ASK: What research have they conducted? With how many offenders? Over
how many years? On what do they base their expertise? A Google-search on “shoplifting” or “shoplifters” does not qualify as research, even today.  …Is Not Making False Claims About their Success Rate or their Program being “Evidence-Based.”

ASK: What evidence can they show that their programs are truly effective? How many recidivism studies do they have to back their claims?  Valid recidivism studies are conducted by the courts themselves and tracked over time. Self-studies conducted by the company itself – the one selling the program – are not a valid measure of success in preventing the next offense.

…Can Provide Valid and Credible References. Offering a program over the internet has empowered many to market themselves as “national” providers – implying that their program is well-established and utilized by courts throughout the country – without having any real track record.

ASK: Can they provide a list of references from court personnel in various counties and states? If so, check the references; reach out to your peers and get honest feedback on effectiveness.

Finally, ASK For A Sample Program And Invest The Time To Go Through It And See Exactly What The Offenders Will Be Learning.

Harry Connick Jr.

Steinway Artist Harry Connick, Jr. and his band performed at the 2010 Governor’s Ball hosted by President and Mrs. Obama on Sunday evening, February 21. Due to a packed East Room of the White House, the usual piano that occupies the room (a 1938 Steinway Art Case piano) was replaced with a smaller Steinway Model O Grand piano that was provided by Steinway Piano Gallery, Washington, D.C. for the event.

During the day, Connick, Jr. and his band performed for (and with) a group of Washington-area music students at a preview of the night’s event led by Mrs. Obama. Prior to the performance, Mrs. Obama paid tribute to Connick, Jr. for his humanitarian efforts in co-founding the Musicians’ Village, part of the New Orleans Habitat for Humanity rebuilding effort following Katrina.

On December 3, 2009, President Obama and a group of world-renowned performers were on hand for the National Tree Lighting Ceremony. In a tradition dating back to 1923, the President was on hand at the Ellipse near the White House to light the tree while bringing a message of peace and hope to the world.

For this year’s event, a group of talented performers were selected to perform, including Steinway Artist Brad Mehldau, Grammy award winner Sheryl Crow, hip-hop artist Common, country artist Ray LaMontagne, American Idol Jordin Sparks, jazz artist Joshua Redman, and the all-female music ensemble Celtic Woman.

All of the event’s performers who played piano or had piano accompaniment used a Steinway Model D concert grand piano (identification number CD-381) that is part of Steinway’s famed bank of Concert & Artist pianos stationed around the world at Steinway dealers. The piano was delivered from Steinway Piano Gallery in Washington, DC for the event and technicians spent over 9 hours preparing the piano so it would be in perfect playing condition for the performances.

2010 Governor’s Ball at The White House

Steinway and the White House have a long and storied history. In 1903, the 100,000th Steinway grand piano was presented to the White House as a gift. It was featured in the East Room of the White House until 1938, when it was replaced by the 300,000th Steinway grand — an Art Case piano with gilt American Eagle supports that is undoubtedly the most famous piano in the White House. The 1938 grand piano is still featured in the East Room (and sometimes in the Entrance Hall) of the White House. The original 1903 grand piano now resides in the Smithsonian Museum.

The next stop for the Steinway concert grand piano used at the National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony is the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. It is one of three Steinway grand pianos that are being provided for the Kennedy Center Honors Program, which will be televised on CBS, Tuesday, December 29 at 9 p.m. EST.

Master shipwright Walt Ansel of Mystic Seaport will take students beyond the traditional introductory boatbuilding and boat repair courses offered here at WoodenBoat School with this challenging and very exciting project. CINDERELLA, a lovely 25′ sloop designed and owned by Henry Scheel, is the centerpiece for this two-week foray into wooden boat restoration. She has been lovingly restored over the last three seasons and will ultimately be relaunched here in Brooklin. The techniques students will use to document, stabilize, and rebuild the hull are the exact same methods used at Mystic Seaport and other professional boatyards around the country. The goal throughout the restoration is to have a strong, longlasting, aesthetically beautiful vessel, faithful to Henry Scheel’s original vision.

Walt’s approach to CINDERELLA’s rebuild will concentrate on accuracy close preservation of her hull shape and scantlings. She was built of Atlantic white cedar over oak frames and backbone. Unfortunately, the keel and floors were all iron bolted. This has resulted in extensive iron rot, necessitating replacement of these timbers and frames. The cedar planking, with its noted durability, was fastened with Everdur bronze and is 90 per cent salvageable. The challenging and interesting task will be to replace all of these internal skeleton parts without having the hull distort, lose its sheer, or become a differently shaped boat. The class will have Scheel’s original lines and offsets to work from.

Our 2008 restoration class was the third session of a planned five-year series of courses. This class accomplished an astonishing amount of work over the two weeks. Twenty new white oak floor timbers were scribed and fitted to the planking and bolted to the keel and new frames. These effectively retied the hull together across the new keel, allowing us to remove the half molds we had put in place in 2006. Old butt blocks were carefully removed and new ones were riveted in place. CINDERELLA’s new mast that was glued together in ’07 was cleaned up, shaped, and bored for mast tangs. All of the elegant, original Merriman hardware, with its distinctive trident logo, will be installed on the mast this coming year after applications of varnish.

The boat’s transom was the subject of much pondering and classic wooden boat problem solving. Due to fresh water intrusion over the years, Walt and the students decided to make patterns and laminate a new curved transom blank out of three layers of mahogany. A big challenge the students faced was building inner transom frames which were curved in both planes to accurately fit the inside curve of the transom and the plank hood ends. As with all of the work students have accomplished over the past three years, the new transom was a work of art.

CINDERELLA’s centerboard trunk had been fabricated in steel and had already been replaced in the 1970s. This was a poor design for the saltwater environment and had rusted through once again. One of our students, an architect with brilliant CAD skills, drew up a scale plan of the keel and centerboard over which the students designed a wooden trunk to be made of locust and fastened with bronze. This is faithful with the restoration goal to eliminate all the iron fastenings in CINDERELLA that come in contact with salt water. On the very last day of our 2008 restoration course, this new trunk was successfully mated to the keel.

Designed in 1948 when Scheel had a New York office, CINDERELLA was intended to be a stock pocket cruiser of exceptional quality. She was built by the Island Creek Boat Shop in 1949. CINDERELLA is 25′ long, 22′3″ on the waterline, with an 8′8″ beam and a 2′20″ draft. Shoal draft and speed were high on Scheel’s list of priorities. The hull has an almost plumb stem, inboard rudder, iron centerboard, and a finely shaped raked and curved transom. This, coupled with a very long, flat run and sharp entrance, made her a Class B winner in the Off Soundings races in eastern Connecticut in the mid-1950s. A marconi-rigged sloop with a short bowsprit and boomkin, CINDERELLA has a low cabin trunk ending in a point at the forward end.

The repairing and rebuilding of wooden boats is a journey that can provide great personal satisfaction. Swinging doors require that objects be set well away from the doorway if the doors are to be used, but sliding and folding doors allow furnishings to be placed closer to the opening. They can also be installed in double-width door openings to divide rooms. The following information will help you decide which doors are most appropriate for your home. Detailed installation instructions will be included with the particular doors you choose. Lowe’s is happy to provide this information as a service to you.

Standard doors are 80″ tall, but your door opening may be smaller than that. Measure the space before you go shopping — a door probably can be cut to fit if the opening is not standard. In a few cases you may have to place a special order for the size you need.

Measure horizontally across both the top and bottom of the opening, as well as vertically on each side. When determining what size door to buy, use the smaller of each of your vertical and horizontal measurements. For example, if the left vertical measurement is 80 1/2″ and the right vertical measurement is 80 1/4″, use 80 1/4″ for the vertical measurement when determining your door size.

You may find that the door opening is not square. In that case, it will be necessary to bring it in line. This is not difficult and, unless the doorway is significantly out of square, will probably be taken care of simply by shimming and leveling the tracks used in the installation. You can cover small misalignments along the door jambs with decorative trim after you install the doors.

Bypass doors work well for closets. They require no door swinging area, so there is no lost floor space. The doors may be made of wood, mirror or glass, and they are usually between 3/4″ and 1 3/8″ thick. Almost any door can be made into a sliding door by installing it with sliding door hardware.

Bypass doors are hung from a track, which is installed below the head jam of the door opening. The track is hidden by a piece of decorative trim. Another track or guide is typically installed in the bottom of the door opening to guide the bottom of the doors.

Installation of bypass doors is a simple procedure. The basic steps are:

• Fit and install the overhead track against the head jamb of the door opening. Use shims if necessary to level the track.
• Attach door rollers to the tops of the doors. The rollers, which fit within the overhead track, are adjustable so the doors will hang plumb.
• Install a track or a set of guides in the bottom of the door opening to keep the doors in line.
• Hang the doors from the overhead track.
• Adjust the tracking guides on the bottom of the doors to straddle the bottom track, preventing the doors from swinging inward or outward.Or fit the doors inside a bottom track or a set of floor-mounted guides: First set the doors inside the track or guides, and are then lift them and hang them from the top track. (Follow the manufacturer’s instructions.)
• Install decorative trim to cover both the hardware and any misalignment of the doors and jambs.

Bifold doors are ideal for situations in which you need access to the full width of the door opening — in a laundry closet, for example. These doors come in a variety of styles, including plain, raised-panel, louvered and mirrored varieties.

Installation of bifold doors is simple and, in general, involves the following steps:

• Install the top track first.
• Install the bottom track on the floor directly below the top track. (Some bifold doors may not use a bottom track.)
• Install the doors by first putting the bottom pivot point into the lower track socket. Then put the top pivot point into the top pivot socket. Usually the top pivot point is spring loaded. To install, retract the pivot point, place it into position, and release it.
• Position the upper and lower sliding guides in the track channels.
• Space the panels evenly and fit them to the door opening by adjusting the track sockets.
• Raise or lower the panels by adjusting the height of the lower pivot pin.

Multifold doors are useful as temporary room dividers.

Multifold doors are made of narrow panels that fold like an accordion. The panels may be made from wood, plastic or fabric.

When closed, these doors resemble paneling or vertical blinds. When open, they take up little space. These doors are generally thin, and they do not usually provide much sound insulation. However, they are easy to install and can even be mounted along ceilings, making them convenient for use as privacy dividers between rooms or to close off spaces.

Multifold doors hang from rollers that run inside a track along the ceiling or door opening head jam. Specific installation instructions will vary with the type.
