What is an Extended Wear Contact Lens

Extended wear contact lens are lenses that may be worn in an extended period of time unlike the daily wear contact lens.  The Food and Drugs Administration approved these extended wear contact lenses, without removal for up to seven days.

New innovations to extended wear are being developed.  A newer type of soft contact lens material, the silicone hydrogel is so permeable, meaning they allow more oxygen to the cornea; the FDA approves them to be worn for a month without removal.  This type of lens is called the continuous wear”.

During its introduction, a lot of eye care practitioners are unconvinced of using extended wear contact lens because it increases incidents of eye infection, especially to those who wear it overnight.  Extended wear contact lenses poses a hazard to the eyes because of the organisms might be lodged on the lenses.  Micro organisms thrive in warm and moist environment and the cornea is the best place for them as oxygen does not penetrate the area well whenever a contact lens is worn.  It may only start as pink eye but if it is left untreated it may lead to serious conditions like blindness.

Because of the growing popularity of the disposable contact lens, extended wear contact lens is making a comeback.  The reason that people acquire eye infections is after they take off their extended lenses and despite cleaned with contact lens solution it was impossible to remove all the proteins and lipids and other deposits accumulated on the lens.  The contact lenses becomes a breeding ground for bacteria and whenever the individual wears the lenses again, it could cause infection and inflammation of the eyes. Today, the contact lenses are disposed after use and never to be used again, avoiding infection from contaminants.

Aside from improper cleaning and disinfecting, the lifestyle you are living may also cause infection in the eyes.  Make sure to avoid exposure to smoke, wearing the contact lens when swimming because this may also leas to serious complications due to infections.  You must ask an eye doctor whether an extended contact lens is appropriate for your needs.

Things You Need About Gas Permeable Contact Lens

Rigid gas permeable contacts (RGP) is another term for gas permeable contact lens.  This type of contact lens is complementary to the soft contact lens. RGPs were introduced in the early 70s by way of silicone rather than polymers. Since the eyes need oxygen, this is a better fit than PMMA because this polycarbon does not allow oxygen to pass through. On the other hand silicone is oxygen permeable, which will result to a greater comfort and eye health.

Gas permeable contact lens is harder to get used to compared to soft contact lens.  The benefits however outweigh the consequences. What’s great about a gas permeable contact lens is that it retains its shape when a person blinks.  . They are extremely durable.  A gas permeable contact lens is tougher than a soft contact lens because it only breaks when someone steps over it while the latter tears easily.  Another benefit of gas permeable contact lens is they are made of materials that don’t contain water so proteins and lipids from the tears do not stick to the contact lens.  The odds of suffering from eye irritations, infections are very low compared to the soft contact lens.  The best benefit of gas permeable contacts is that they allow oxygen to pass through the corneas.  This avoids inflammation of the cornea and other serious eye complications.

Most people prefer using gas permeable contact lenses even if they have different problems.  Astigmatism, presbyopia, and keratoconus are among those ailments.  A person suffering from astigmatism might opt for this because it provides a desirable acuity.  Others who are afflicted with presbyopia prefers gas permeable contact lens because of its multi-focal designs.  On the other hand, people with keratoconus use these lenses because it prevents extreme visual distortion.  Since people with dry eyes blink less, a gas permeable contact lens is recommended.  Gas permeable contact lenses are also being utilized by people who use the computer often.
Gas permeable contact lens requires more care since they last longer than soft contact lens.  Before deciding what type of lens to wear, always take time to consult a physician to determine if a gas permeable contact is the right contact lens for your condition.

Contact Lens Remover: Take off your lenses correctly

For those who wear hard and gas permeable contact lenses, it is essential to own a contact lens remover.  These lenses are occasionally hard to remove with the typical “popping out” method.  Hard contact lenses tends to stick to the eye firmly by suction to the cornea.  This is where the contact lens remover comes in. If a person often lose and asks for new prescription for a contact lens, optometrist or ophthalmologist recommends buying a contact lens remover.

If you know how to properly use a contact lens remover, taking off a hard contact lens will be easy as 123.  The first step is to make sure the contact lenses are in your eyes before attempting to remove them.  People who forgets that they are not wearing any contact lenses often injure their eyes by poking a contact lens through it.  Look at a mirror first and check if you have contact lenses on.

If you are certain that you are wearing a contact lens, place a drop of rewetting solution on both your eyes to lubricate the lenses.  Moisten the suction cup of the contact lens remover with a drop of rewetting solution.

The next step is quite tricky but once you get used to it everything will be easy.  Place the contact lens remover directly and squarely on the front of the contact lens.  The lens will attach to the plunger at this point. Pull the plunger gently away from the eye.  The lens will come out quickly, follow the same method to remove the other contact lens.

Remember to avoid direct contact of the lens remover on the surface of the eye because it may cause corneal abrasions and other eye infection.  One more thing, do not use a contact lens remover if you are using a soft lens.  Add a few more drops to lubricate the lenses if you are still having a hard time removing them.
